Walter Lewis, a prominent Great Lakes Maritime Historian, will present insights into the Maritime History of the Great Lakes and the digitization of related historical records and journals, including the H. N. Throop Collection as shared by W-PHS.

When: Wednesday, August 19th, at 7pm
Where: Gates Hall, 4107 Lake Road, Pultneyville

This program is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted and very much appreciated.  Your support enables W-PHS to continue preservation efforts to make valuable improvements to Gates Hall, preserving its notable place in history, which began in 1826 when it was built as Union Church, the community’s first sacred place of worship.

Lewis’ presentation will examine the emergence of Great Lakes tourism and travel during the 19th century and the opportunities it created for sailors, steamboat operators, and businessmen such as Captain H.N. Throop.

The year 1825 was pivotal. With the opening of the Erie Canal, travelers gained a new route connecting the Hudson River with the Great Lakes. That same year, Theodore Dwight and Henry Gilpin published travel guides for those looking to escape the summer heat and explore the North.

The journey that became known as the Northern Tour could take travelers from New York City to Albany, west along the Erie Canal to Buffalo and Niagara Falls, and then east through New York or Upper Canada to the St. Lawrence River. From there, travelers could journey through the Thousand Islands to Montreal and Quebec City before returning by way of the Richelieu River, Lake Champlain and Saratoga Springs.

For communities along Lake Ontario, including Pultneyville, this growing movement of people was part of a much larger maritime and transportation network. Local ports, vessels, sailors and businesses were connected to activity extending across the Great Lakes and into the St. Lawrence River, creating opportunities that would continue to develop over the next century.

Lewis will discuss efforts to digitize and preserve Great Lakes maritime records and journals, including the H.N. Throop Collection provided by W-PHS. These historical materials help connect the stories of individuals and communities along Lake Ontario with the broader maritime history of the Great Lakes.

Save the Date! W-PHS Member Picnic, Wednesday, August 5th

Mark your calendars for August 5th and plan to attend the annual Williamson-Pultneyville Historical Society (W-PHS) Picnic at 6pm.

This year’s summer event will be hosted by Peter and Deb Parts at their picturesque lakeside home at 3207 Lake Road, Williamson, NY.*

All are welcome, and as always, attendees are asked to bring a well-filled picnic basket and table service. Water and coffee will be provided.  Should anyone desire to bring their favorite beverage, please feel free to do so.

In keeping with America 250 and the commemoration of historical events that helped to shape America, the evening’s program will be about the Founding of Union Church . . . the community’s first sacred place of worship, which today is known as Gates Hall.  The presentation will immediately follow dinner and will be presented by Peridot Howland, Town of Williamson Historian and W-PHS Board Member.

Along with the historic commemoration of America 250, Union Church is celebrating its 200 Birthday in 2026, continuing to hold its sense of place in our shared history.  With W-PHS as the current sole steward of this 200 year old property and the support of volunteers throughout the years, the Hall which resides on both the National and State Registers of Historic Places continues to be lovingly cared for and utilized for local, regional and national meetings and lectures, piano recitals, concerts and musicals, fundraisers, W-PHS programs and plays, celebrations of life, celebratory family activities . . . and more.

Bring your appetites on August 5th!   Plan to relax and enjoy the lake breeze along the southern shore of Lake Ontario and its mesmerizing views while socializing and learning about our local history.

*Please note that in the event of adverse weather conditions, the picnic and program will be held in historic Gates Hall, formerly  Union Church, at 4107 Lake Road in Pultneyville.
